Right From Your Back Door...

From the deck, walk down the path in the yard to our dock and beautiful Lake Adirondack. Take the canoe for a peaceful glide around the lake, or ride in the 12' fishing boat which has a quiet electric trolling motor. There is a small shed by the lake with life preservers of various sizes and fishing gear.

Just off the dock is a swim raft which is fun for splashing into the cool, clear water. No Summer is complete without Cannonball jumps! You might enjoy just sitting on the dock, dipping your feet in the lake and watching for some of the many birds of the Adirondacks. Families of loons and ducks seem to love our little cove.

In the evenings, build a fire in the lakeside fire pit and roast marshmallows, sing camp songs, tell ghost stories, or just enjoy the bountiful stars and peaceful evening air.

Indian Lake Trails

Hamilton County Trails
View from Castle Rock

Discover nature on some of the abundant hiking trails in the area. Difficulty levels vary from easy strolls to demanding mountain climbs so there is something for everyone. Fall is a wonderful time to visit the trails and delight your senses with the spectrum of colors as the leaves change.

This is the view from Castle Rock. A moderate hike leads to it that begins about 15 miles from Bear Lodge. We keep an Adirondack Trail Guide for the Central Region with detailed maps and descriptions for many hikes of all levels in the cabin to help you plan your hikes.

White Water Rafting

If you want the thrill of your life you came to the right place. The trip starts right in town on the Indian River then leads to the Hudson and through the gorge. This is an experience you will talk about for a long time to come and the scenery is spectacular. Class V waters in Spring, Class III in Summer. The Hudson may look tame from the road, but the trip is on a part that is mostly not visible. The town releases water from the dam to make the water perfect.

We went with Adirondack River Outfitters (ARO) this Summer (2007) and everyone had a fabulous time. ARO has the best prices and includes a chicken bbq afterward. I highly recommend this trip. If you go, tell them you heard about them from Bear Lodge.

Please don't attempt this by yourself. Use one of the rafting companies. It's a blast. Photo by Melody Thomas

This company offers a variety of scenic cruises on Raquette Lake, some with lunch, dinner, or dancing. They operate Spring through Fall with something special in every season. Raquette Lake is about a half hour from Indian Lake.

Mountain Biking

Biking is a popular activity. You'll find trails and events abundant and the rewards of the beautiful landscape inspiring.

Cedar River

Wakely Lodge

There are two beautiful golf courses in Indian Lake: Wakely Lodge and Cedar River. I couldn't find a website for Wakely, but if you search the internet you will be able to find a description on some golf websites. Their address is 110 Cedar River Rd, Indian Lake.

Inlet Golf Club

This is an 18 hole championship golf course on Rte 28 in Inlet, NY. I'm told it is great. It is approximately 30 miles from Indian Lake.

Downhill Skiing
Gore Mountain

In winter, our heated home is the perfect base from which to enjoy many winter sports. Bear Lodge is the ultimate Gore Mountain rental home. Gore Mtn is my favorite ski resort. There has recently been a lot of expansion to the slopes including additional trails and a tubing hill. Vertical is 2100 feet with 85 trails. Gore Mountain is 17 miles to the east on Rt 28 in North Creek.

Whiteface Mountain

Whiteface Mountain is located in Lake Placid where the 1980 Olympic were held. It is about 90 miles from Indian Lake, but you may find it exciting to ski there. As you enter the town you will see the Olympic ski jump and bobsled run. You can ride the bobsled with a professional driver. I haven't tried it but I've heard it's an experience.

Indian Lake

For the beginning skier, there is a small hill with two slopes and t-bar in Indian Lake. This hill is also great for sledding. Indian Lake offers an ice rink as well.

Horseback Riding and Sleigh Rides
Circle B Ranch

Horseback Riding in Late Fall

Circle B Ranch offers horseback riding and hay rides. In winter when there is snow you can go for a horse drawn sleigh ride as well. What fun!

Circle B is located in Chestertown about 45 minutes east of Indian Lake. The trails are nice and the horses are friendly. It's great family fun.

This is a ride some of my friends and I took at Circle B in late Fall. The cooler weather was great for riding and the views were beautiful.

Adirondack Museum

The Adirondack Museum is a must-see attraction. This museum tells the stories of how people have lived, worked, played and traveled in the Adirondack region since the early 1800s. It has many special events.

Sagamore is an historic Adirondack great camp. It offers tours and programs to foster understanding, care and respect for nature.

The W!LD Center

The W!LD Center is a new museum in Tupper Lake about 45 minutes from Indian Lake. It has live exhibits, live animals, a glacial ice well, indoor forest, indoor river, and 31-acres of hiking trails.

There is also an Indian Lake Museum at the corner of Crowhill and Main streets which has a collection of Indian Lake memorabilia. Summer hours are Tuesday and Thursday 1-4 pm and Friday 7-9 pm.
